In August 2009, SEEDS awarded $37,500 in Classroom Enrichment Grants to the five Daphne public schools and Christ the King Catholic School, bringing the total amount distributed since 2005 to $121,000. Due to the current financial crisis, several of this year’s allocations are being used to offset cutbacks in instructional materials and services.

Through the continuing generosity of the Friends of SEEDS, the foundation remains a source of support and inspiration to Daphne teachers and principals.  This year’s grant winners include:

SEEDS LYCEUM KEEPS DAPHNE LEARNING

The SEEDS Lyceum has been one of our organization’s signature initiatives since the foundation was established in 2005.  In the tradition of America’s historic lyceum movement, SEEDS volunteers have worked to create opportunities both inside the classroom and out in the community that are designed to nurture a lifelong love of learning.

In 2008, we launched the SEEDS Summer Lyceum Program that offers thematic classes focusing on the humanities to students in grades K-12 and their families.  Some of the most popular to date have been Around the World in Five Days (gr. K-2), Poetry Café (gr. 3-5), Multimedia Me (gr. 6-8) and Film as Art (gr. 9-12).

The 10-hour courses are held in two-hour sessions over a one-week period – either at a Daphne school or in other community settings – and tuition ranges from $50-70.  Scholarships based on need are offered each year and information is available through Daphne school counselors.

Course offerings are announced in early spring and interested parents may download a program brochure/registration form from this web site at that time.

However, due to SEEDS’ extensive work with the recent Vote Yes campaign, we have made a decision to suspend our usual Lyceum summer program for 2010 in favor of a timely but very different community education endeavor.

SEEDS is instead gearing up to help lead an extensive public engagement project during July - August that will involve holding at least 50 meetings throughout the county to continue informing Baldwin citizens about education issues and to seek public input on needed improvements.  This work will be done in conjunction with six other local enrichment foundations and promises to help shape school district and community decisions over the coming years.

SEEDS will resume a full schedule of summer enrichment classes in 2011.

DAPHNE ROCKS!

SEEDS' signature springtime fundraiser – the Classic Rock 5K & Fun Run – is held annually on the first Saturday in March. The event now regularly attracts over 1000 participants and has become a favorite on the local running calendar, having been named a Corporate Cup race for the past four years.

The 3.1 mile scenic course winds through Olde Towne Daphne's historic neighborhoods ending at Daphne's beautiful new City Hall. A certified one-mile course now also offers local runners an opportunity to vie for state records.

The popular Classic Rock Post-Race Party features a live band, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and lots of fun activities for children. Awards include National Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum shop items for overall and division winners along with medals for first, second and third place winners in five-year age groups.

The 2011 Classic Rock 5K & Fun Run will be held on Saturday, March 5. Registration will be available on active.com later this fall, and after January 1, in Mobile and Baldwin area fitness centers and in all Daphne schools.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE INITIATIVES

Each year SEEDS works with Daphne school principals to undertake a new community project to promote academic excellence.  The foundation brings students and citizens together to encourage creativity, personal initiative and high standards.

SEEDS’ Academic Excellence projects to date have included:

  • 2006-07 - TEAM Up for Daphne Character
  • 2007-08 - Spring Testing Awareness Campaign
  • 2008-09 - Together We Read
  • 2009-10 - Daphne Writes!

Our children thrive when our community unites to raise expectations and recognize excellence.

Since 2005 over $121,000 has been distributed to teachers in the five Daphne public schools and at Christ the King Catholic School through SEEDS’ Classroom Enrichment Grant Program. Generated by the foundation’s annual community fund-raisers, these enrichment dollars have funded creative proposals developed by Daphne teachers to expand our children’s horizons and improve academic achievement.

For the 2010-’11 school term, the teacher/team grant proposal deadline has been moved to November 1 with announcement of grant award winners to take place before the Thanksgiving holidays. The goal of this new timeline is to promote effective needs assessment and collaboration among participating teachers.
