SEEDS Lyceum Summer Camps offer cool classes for kids.

SEEDS’ Summer Lyceum is a unique program of thematic classes, all focusing on the humanities and designed to encourage new interests and a love of learning.

  • Each 10-hour course is held in the afternoon over a one-week period on either a Daphne public school campus or at a select community location. Evening classes are open to parents and siblings, as well.
  • Tuition ranges from $50-$70 for each course. Registration is limited to twenty students per class, and participants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • A limited number of scholarships are also awarded based on teacher recommendation and demonstrated interest and need.
  • Course offerings are announced in early spring and interested parents may download a program brochure/registration form from this web site at that time.
  • To be placed on our Lyceum mailing list, Email SEEDS.

DAPHNE ROCKS!

The 2009 Classic Rock 5K & Fun Run broke several new records on Saturday, March 7, when 1400 participants hit the road in Olde Daphne to raise $17,000 for SEEDS’ Classroom Enrichment Grant Program.

Congratulations to top male and female 5K finishers, Richard Ondimu of Mobile and Amy Huff of Daphne, who won the 3.1 mile event in 15:19 and 18:54 respectively. These figures represent not only the event’s best attendance and earnings to date, but also a new 5K course record from both runners.

The overall Masters Division winners were Douglas Meduna (18:49) of Mobile and Kelly Kemmerlin (20:59) of Gulf Shores.

Other top award winners included Grand Masters David Jeffrey (20:10) of Semmes and Melanie Moore (22:48) of Mobile; Senior Grand Masters Leon Mattics (24:04) of Semmes and Mona Williams (30:50) of Mobile; and Race Walker Charity Williams (52:00) of Saraland.

The under-15 male winners in the one-mile Classic Rock Fun Run were: first place – John Walker, Daphne Middle School; second place – Taylor Brown, Christ the King Catholic School; and third place – Austin White, also from Christ the King School. Top female Fun Run participants included: first place - Hannah Spradlin, W. J. Carroll Intermediate School, second place – Caitlin Simison; and third place – Blakely Walker, Daphne Middle School.

SEEDS extends special thanks to our Classic Rock Event Sponsors – Merrill-Lynch, D’Oliveira-Frick Group and Terry Thompson Chevrolet – whose continuing support helps sustain the work of the foundation.

Finally, congratulations to the winning homerooms in the 2009 Classic Rock Class Competition. Each earned a follow-up Classic Rock party for registering the most participants:

  • Christ the King Catholic School – Sandy Fortner, 1st grade
  • Daphne Elementary – Viki McGinty, Kindergarten
  • W. J. Carroll Intermediate – Michelle Henderson, 5th grade
  • Daphne East Elementary – April Thomas, 5th grade
  • Daphne Middle School – Carolyn Buckley, 6th grade

Mark your calendar now for Saturday, March 6, when Olde Towne Daphne will rock and roll once again at SEEDS’ 2010 Classic Rock 5K and Fun Run.

Questions?

In 2006 – at the request of the Daphne principals – SEEDS brought together a group of local business and civic leaders to promote character education as a means of improving school climate and student achievement.

SEEDS has since hosted a community-wide rally, quarterly meetings of the TEAM Up for Daphne Character Coalition, an all-day seminar for Baldwin County educators and, most recently, a Principal for a Day Project to increase awareness about and understanding of character education’s role in shaping our students’ long-term success.

Over the coming year, SEEDS plans to shift our advocacy efforts to focus on how we can better work together as a community to encourage academic excellence.

Members of SEEDS’ newly renamed TEAM Up for Academic Excellence Coalition recently took part in carpool and bus line promotions during spring testing and are planning a community-wide seminar to improve understanding about student achievement data for later this year.

It takes a TEAM to help all of Daphne’s children become all they can be.
