When SEEDS, Daphne’s educational enrichment foundation, came up with the idea of paying tribute to the city’s Italian heritage by bringing neighbors together for an evening of great food and fun, Helen Trione Callaway knew it was a recipe for success.
“It just had the makings of a wonderful new annual event for Daphne,” said Mrs. Callaway, who served as honorary chairperson for the inaugural Mamma Mia Cook-off held last November and who has agreed to reprise that role again this year.
“Now we’re working to make it even bigger and better for 2006,” added Mrs. Callaway, a descendent of one of the original Italian families who settled in Daphne in the late 1800’s.
The second annual Mamma Mia Cook-off is set for Saturday evening, Nov. 11, beginning at 6 p.m. on the grounds of Hutchinson, Moore and Rauch Engineering, located at 2039 Main Street, just across from Lott Park. Proceeds will benefit SEEDS’ educational enrichment initiatives such as the Teacher Mini-grant Program and research related to the development of The Lyceum, SEEDS’ long-term signature project to establish a state-of-the-art community learning center in Daphne.
Teams from throughout the area will once again vie for Il Primo Premio (First Place) in the lively competition. The 2006 event will feature a new corporate division as well as a separate contest for non-profits and families. Local businesses, civic organizations, schools, churches, and neighborhoods are encouraged to recruit their most enthusiastic chefs and sign up a team to take part. A special invitation to join in the fun is extended to members of the original Italian families in Daphne.
Advance tickets are $25 per person and may be purchased beginning Oct. 1 at the Daphne Recreation Department (located next to the Daphne Civic Center on Highway 98), at Will Hughes Market and Catering, The Frame Corner and at Eastern Shore Orthodontic Specialists (all located on Main Street) in Olde Daphne. Tickets at the gate will be $30 per person.
For their admission price, Mamma Mia guests will sample numerous Italian delicacies, enjoy complimentary side items and beverages, and earn a chance to win one of several exciting door prizes. Randy Davis and members of the Jubilee Orchestra have generously agreed to donate their time and talent again with dancing and a live auction rounding out the evening. Local veterans and their spouses will also be honored with a special spotlight dance.
“This is a great way for everyone in Daphne to get to know their neighbors better while doing something positive for our children and schools,” said Mrs. Callaway.
