SEEDS Awards over $13,000 to Daphne Educators Through 2nd Annual Teacher Mini-grant Program

August 22, 2006

SEEDS, Daphne’s education foundation, presented more than $13,000 in Teacher Mini-grants to 23 new classroom enrichment initiatives at the August 21 meeting of the Daphne City Council. This figure represents a 124 percent increase in community-generated funds for classroom enhancement projects in the Daphne schools over the inaugural 2005-’06 year of the grants program.

“As a result of the success of our two signature fundraising projects – the Mamma Mia Italian Cook-off and the Classic Rock 5K and Fun Run – we are pleased to announce that the Daphne community came together to generate enough revenue over the past school year to be able to fully fund the creative project ideas of every teacher who applied for a SEEDS grant this summer,” said Denise D’Oliveira, SEEDS grants program chair.

“That’s what our foundation is working to encourage – innovative teaching and community collaboration,” she added.

SEEDS is an independent, non-profit education foundation that seeks to bring together citizens of all ages who share a vision for education’s role in Daphne’s future. SEEDS’ enrichment dollars are currently at work at Christ the King Catholic School and on each of Daphne’s five public school campuses.

The 2006 Mamma Mia Cook-off: A Celebration of Daphne’s Italian Heritage is set for Saturday evening, Nov. 11, and will be held once again at 2039 Main Street (on the grounds of Hutchinson, Rauch and Moore Engineering), just across from Lott Park – from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The next SEEDS’ Classic Rock 5K and Fun Run is slated for Saturday, March 3, 2007, in Olde Towne Daphne. Additional information about both events is available at 251/656-SEED (656-7333).
