SEEDS, Daphne’s educational enrichment foundation, will once again honor the city’s Italian heritage when the second annual Mamma Mia Cook-off is held on Saturday, November 11, from 6-9 p.m. on the grounds of Hutchinson, Moore and Rauch Engineering, just across the street from Lott Park in Olde Daphne.
Teams from throughout the community – cooking in honor or under the guidance of their favorite matriarch – will compete for Il Primo Premio (First Place) in both a Corporate and a Non-profit Division this year. Culinary categories to be judged – and sampled by Mamma Mia guests – include Carne (meat), Sensa Carne (meatless), Pollo (chicken), and Frutti di Mare (seafood) entrees.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Randy Davis and the Jubilee Orchestra with big screen college football available for fans, door prizes, a live auction and the awards presentation rounding out the evening. A special effort is under way to invite descendents of the original Italian families who settled in Daphne in the late 1800’s to participate. A spotlight dance is planned to honor them and local veterans in attendance.
“This is a chance for everyone to come out and support our education foundation and the Daphne schools,” said Helen Trione Callaway, honorary chairperson of the event.
“And by doing that, everybody gets to enjoy some great Italian food a night out with their friends and neighbors,” she added.
Advance tickets are $25 per person and may be purchased at the Daphne Recreation Department, Will Hughes Market and Catering, Sylvan Learning Center and The Frame Corner – or at any Daphne public school or at Christ the King Catholic School. Tickets at the gate will be $30 per person.
Event sponsorships are still available and will benefit SEEDS’ ongoing classroom enrichment initiatives. Local businesses or company groups, churches, civic or social organizations, and families or neighborhoods are urged to consider forming a Mamma Mia team. SEEDS is an independent, non-profit education foundation that brings together citizens of all ages who value learning and share a vision for education’s role in Daphne’s future. SEEDS’ enrichment dollars are currently at work at Christ the King Catholic School and on each of Daphne’s five public school campuses.
