When supporters of SEEDS, Daphne’s educational enrichment foundation, gather Saturday evening, Nov. 11, for the second annual Mamma Mia Cook-off, they will not only enjoy great Italian cuisine prepared by local chefs and kitchen gourmets, they will also have a chance to bid on some entertainment, sports and family items of great interest donated by Eastern Shore businesses and community leaders.
Mamma Mia – which was established in 2005 as a celebration of Daphne’s Italian heritage – will be held from 6-9 p.m. at 2039 Main Street (on the grounds of Hutchinson, Moore and Rauch Engineering) in Olde Daphne – just across the street from Lott Park.
Among the items to be featured in the live auction is an authentic autographed soccer jersey from Brazilian star Pele’ (donated by Sergio D’Oliveira of Merrill-Lynch, Fairhope, and framed by Ceanne Wachter of The Frame Corner in Daphne); a gourmet dinner for eight from Will Hughes Catering and Market; a two-night stay at the Marriott Grand Hotel; four rounds of golf at Lakewood Golf Club; and a complimentary estate plan from Daphne attorney Leslie Fields.
Corporate and non-profit cooking teams representing Daphne restaurants, businesses, schools and families will compete for Il Primo Premio (First Place) in four categories – Carne (meat), Sensa Carne (meatless), Pollo (chicken), and Frutti di Mare (seafood) entrees. Event judges will include David Holloway, food editor for the Mobile Press-Register; Kinnon Phillips, Lagniappe cuisine editor; and Chef Will Hughes of Daphne.
Randy Davis and the Jubilee Orchestra will provide musical entertainment for the evening with a special spotlight dance planned for members of the original Italian families of Daphne and local veterans and their spouses or guests. College football fans will once again enjoy a big-screen televised broadcast of their favorite games, as well.
Advance tickets are $25 per person and admission at the gate will be $30. Tickets may be purchased through Friday at Will Hughes Market and Catering and the Frame Corner in Olde Daphne, at Sylvan Learning Center, or at the Daphne Recreation Department. Tickets are also available in the offices of each Daphne public school and at Christ the King School.
Proceeds from the 2006 Mamma Mia Cook-off will benefit SEEDS’ ongoing classroom enrichment initiatives.
