Hundreds Set to Hit the Street for SEEDS on Saturday

Date: February 23, 2007

Nearly 900 Daphne students, parents, educators and other friends of SEEDS (Supporting Educational Enrichment in Daphne’s Schools) will take to the streets on Sat., March 3, for the 2007 Classic Rock 5K and Fun Run. As a Corporate Cup event this year, the Daphne education foundation’s third annual road race fund-raiser should also attract many avid runners from throughout the area.

The Classic Rock 5K (3.1 mile) race gets under way at 8 a.m. from near Daphne Public Library on Main Street and follows a mostly flat, loop course through the downtown area.  Participants in the 1-mile Fun Run will set out from Centennial Part (across from Daphne City Hall) at 9 a.m. and finish near Daphne Public Library.  The Post-Race Party will feature “Soup Bone” – a popular, local classic rock band – as well as merchandise from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for top runners, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, soft beverages, door prizes and numerous children’s activities through 11 a.m. Parking will be available in the Daphne Civic Center complex area and, where allowed, in Olde Daphne near Centennial Park -- with shuttle service provided between the two locations.

Over the past two weeks, a school program sign-up competition was held in the five Daphne public schools and at Christ the King School that resulted in a record response from local students and their families. Winners of the Classic Rock Homeroom Party to be given by SEEDS later in the spring on each campus will be announced – along with all age-group and overall race winners -- during Saturday’s awards ceremony set for 9:30 a.m.

Joining the Classic Rock 5K and Fun Run this year as Major Sponsors of the event are four local companies with strong ties to Daphne and an ongoing commitment to SEEDS – Citrin Law Firm; First Gulf Bank; Merrill Lynch, D’Oliveira-Frick Group; and Terry Thompson Chevrolet.

On-line registration for the race ( HYPERLINK "http://www.active.com/" \o "http://www.active.com/" www.Active.com) continues through midnight on Feb. 28. General race registration forms are still available at all local fitness venues, and day-of-event registration will be held from 7-7:45 a.m. in front of the Daphne Public Library. The 5K entry cost on Saturday will be $20 and the Fun Run sign-up fee is $10.

The 2007 Classic Rock event benefits SEEDS’ Classroom Enrichment Grant Program.  Since 2005 over $19,000 has been invested in innovative instructional projects as a result of SEEDS’ community fund-raisers.
