Steps Up For Daphne's Schools

Members of the group Billboard magazine has called the "thoroughly modern American band" recently chose to invest in SEEDS' work and mission in direct response to the current education funding crisis.

3 Doors Down, the quintessential rock ensemble that got its start in Escatawpa, Mississipi, in 1995, has donated $10,000 through their charity arm, The Better Life Foundation,††to benefit Daphne students.

The much-needed funds are providing services and materials that have been wiped out by current funding cuts including a part-time reading coach, after-school math tutors and new library books.

Despite their international rock-hero status, the group has never abandoned its roots along the Gulf Coast. In 2003, they formed The Better Life Foundation – named after their first studio release – with the mission of "changing the world, one life at a time." Since then, more than $2 million has been donated to local children's charities including extensive support for those aiding victims of Hurricane Katrina.

"It is definitely tough to see schools in our own community facing such adversity and hardship due to all the cut-backs," said Matt Roberts, lead guitarist for the band and a Daphne resident.

"My hope is that, through this contribution, we can help raise awareness for organizations such as SEEDS, and get people in†the community involved in helping our schools when they need it most," added Roberts.

The band's decision to spotlight needs in local schools is the first time SEEDS has been approached with an unsolicited gift to be used for emergency purposes.

"We were blown away†by their offer to help address some of the major cut-backs our schools are dealing with," said SEEDS president Ashley Hammond.

"Their gift demonstrates the power for good that can be achieved when community members step in to pick up the slack," said Hammond.
